Internet Explorer Handling of Office Documents

I am getting a bit sick of Internet Explorer "opening" rather than "saving" Microsoft Office documents. It opens them in the "Temporary Internet Files" folder, staff make changes, click save and lose their work.

 

Obviously in "some" circumstances the work is recoverable from browsing those folders, but i have a feeling that files opened from an SSL server might not be (not sure).

 

I have read around it and i cant see any way of changing this behaviour client-side. Can it be changed server-side?

 

Alternatively, can anyone think of a way of delivering the downloaded file with perhaps a nag to remind people to "SAVE" rather than "OPEN"?

 

Of course Chrome and Firefox don't behave like this, but i need a solution for IE

It is unchecked as default - which allows the file to be opened in IE. It is stored in the cache (C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files) from the cache and does not prompt to save anywhere else.

 

If i check that tickbox, it just screws up IE (often locking it up completely) and refuses to open or save the file anywhere

 

I really do hate IE - but what can you do?!

 

I'll transfer the question (with a link back here) to the "feature requests" thread, though i deliberately started a thread as its not an issue with HAP, rather with IE. There used to be a way of delivering a file as a save rather than an open(server side) (is it to do with mime types or something?) but i couldn't find any reference when i searched..

 

I guess the messiest / easiest solution of all would be to pop a nag/reminder evertime someone tries to open an effected filetype via IE.

The run thing is all to do with IE, there isn't really a way of stopping it

I will add this to HAP+ v7.6, you can also add this now by:

 

Open ~/mycomputer.aspx or ~/mycomputersl.aspx
