Backup Tapes Contents

Hi

 

I have a pile of LTO backup tapes and would like to know what they are and what is on them..

 

Could someone describe step by step how I would insert and see what is on each tape using Bacup Exec 9 and 10

 

I seem to be doing something wrong as each tape I put in seems to have the same backup yet cannot restore the files

Without being at the server - think you need to "Inventory" the tapes to see what is on there.

So I will be at the server..

 

Put in a tape..

Click Inventory and then I'll see whats on the tape and can restore if I wanted..

 

How do i see what Media it is ?

There's a "Media" tab on Exec 10 I think (I'm not at the server right now), and if you click that and then highlight your tape drive in the list you can then right-click said drive and tell it to inventory whatever is in the drive.

 

This should leave you with the media in the right-hand pane with whatever label was used on it (or the default) and if you right click this object you should get a Properties option that will let you see how much of the tape has been used etc etc. Also there is usually an information pane at the bottom of this screen that tells you the media type (AIT etc).

I did the inventory on 3 tapes.. and when I went to restore on the tape they all had the same backup dates... yet they shouldn't have ?

 

Any Ideas to why this is happening ?

Mmmmm..not sure about that to be honest. Sorry I can't be of more help on that one. I would say that if you don't need the tapes now it would be a good idea to erase them and re-inventory, making sure to label them too. You could try stopping and restarting the Backup Exec Engine...it's a long shot...but as they say on the IT Crowd, "have you tried turning it off and on again?"

I used to get that sometimes. Could be the tapes are screwed so it is just showing you what it thinks it is IE: the last one it read, or try closing down the program and then re-catalog between tapes.

What is the diffrenece between Inventory and catalog ?
