HP Switches

Hi everyone,

 

I have searched around a bit and found lots of discussion about switches but none answer the questions I have. I'm slightly overwhelmed by the range of HP switches.

 

1. What's the significance of the first letter? I (eventually) found out V stands for Value (and not Voice); what about A, E and anything else I've missed?

 

2. What's the functional difference between the V1905 and V1910 series (besides processor speed and RAM)?

 

3. What's the difference between "fully managed" and "smart managed"?

 

Ultimately, I'm looking for the following:

 

- 24 ports, all gigabit

- PoE to at least "some" ports

- the option to add a couple of gigabit fibre uplinks in the future

- the ability to prioritise a few ports (i.e. some degree of management)

 

I don't currently need VLANs but like the idea of having the ability to use them in the future, if the option isn't too expensive.

The smart managed ones tend to be via web interface instead of having the web interface and the gui.

 

E series I would think are enterprise carrier class ones.

Look at poe injectors/midspans if you only need 'some poe' - we have mostly HP switches now but none of them have x poe ports since we found we could add 6/12 ports of PoE more easily with midspans.

Whoa, that's still pretty pricey. I was thinking more along these lines:

The v series also appears to be made up of the old 3 com lineup.

never said there was anything wrong, you do need to check the warranty though as not all hp switches now have lifetime warranty some are only 3 years.

Thank you, everybody, for all the information so far. I think I have two remaining questions:

 

1. If 'V' is for Value and 'E' is for Enterprise, does that mean 'A' sits in between?

 

(2. I've answered myself: the V1905 doesn't come in gigabit.)

 

3. Will a "smart managed" switch allow me to prioritise certain ports? Are they just missing the RS232 port or are there other restrictions?

Suppose it just comes down to personal preference as well as budget obviously! Hp & Cisco are the big boys but the likes of Netgear and the rest aren't far behind!

 

I'm currently quoting on a solution for a school where I've had to compare those 3 and Netgear are a lot cheaper. I suppose hp and cisco have the name and the rep but they also have the price tag to go with it!

Personally I would go for an HP E2810-24g Fully managed

 

also remember to shop around - if you buy the switches from a supplier who sources from Europe then you can get some very very good pricing. (there is nothing wrong with buying from Europe it just annoys HP!)

 

HP can't refuse to help you becuase it was purchased in the EU becuase of the EU free trade rules!

 

Also remember that never pay the website price! talk to an account manager and they tend to be able to knock a little bit off!

I'm open to some persuasion on brand. I tried looking up the Netgear alternative (I think it'd have to be the GS724TP, wouldn't it?) but it ended up dearer than the HP. EDIT: No, the HP's dearer. I was looking at the wrong model again. Maybe Netgear will win after all!

What Glennda is talking about is known as grey stock but the Miscos and Insight etc of this world don't do it. But it is a lot cheaper

I do a lot of stuff with HP ProCurve Kit - I'm in the process of rolling out 15 2510G-24 and 48G Switches, you can get the 2510G-24 for about just over £300ish, excellent switches.

 

These are all lifetime warranty.

You do end up at the V1910-24G-PoE of which there are two versions. If you want an alternative, take a look at Netgears GS724TP-100EUS
