2008 Remote desktop and IIS

Hello,

We've setup a remote desktop server and a virtual desktop pool on 2008. Everything works fine internally with the address http://RDHSERVER/rdweb, however, we need to make it accessible externally, and by just typing in http://RDHSERVER brings up the IIS welcome page. Our LEA has set up an externally available address which won't countenance sticking the rdweb bit on the end of the address. How can we make RDHSERVER IIS channel all requests through to rdweb?

you could put a redirect page in the site root of http://rdhserver.school.county.uk to redirect people to http://rdhserver.school.county.uk/rdweb

Sorry, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to IIS. Where would I set that up? The web address is in this format -

http://folders.schoolname.LEAuthority.sch.uk

Could I set the redirect up to simply http://rdhserver/rdweb, as if it were in the same network?

Again, I'm pretty unskilled at IIS stuff.

you need to create a html page called index.html and insert the following (this page needs to be in the wwwroot of the rdhserver)

 

 

 

 

Replace the Google with http://rdhserver/rdweb (or whatever the external address of the rdhserver is)

I get your drift, the only problem is that the address that our network people have given us is simply a redirect to another internal IP address of the RD server, not a FQDN as such. When I put the redirect in, I've redirected to http://servername/rdweb, as it doesn't have a web address, so I really want IIS to kick off remote desktop, and not simply show the IIS welcome screen. It seems that IIS is refusing to acknowledge that RDweb has been installed. Hope this makes sense!

Can you tell me what the external domain is so I can see exactly what you mean.

you say that url gives the IIS start page from externally, i just get page cannot be displayed.

 

Does it work for you from home?

 

If it does have you tried http://folders.ashgrove.valeofglamorgan.sch.uk/rdweb , if that works then the redirect i mentioned earlier should work.

Just tried it externally for ya, it is trying to redirect tohttp://andy/rdweb. Will the http://folders.ashgrove.valeofglamorgan.sch.uk/rdweb work inside your network aswell (it should do, if it does not ask the LEA to create an internal DNS record at their end), if it does i would point the redirect to http://folders.ashgrove.valeofglamorgan.sch.uk/rdweb so that it works seemlessly inside and out. If you need any more advice please feel free to ask

That is strange sidnuts, it's working great for us. it really should just work..are you sure you are doing this correctly as it is really simple to set up?
