[windows software] Office CAL tied to media kit

Hi FOlks,

 

Before I started my school wanted to buy an additiional 8 Office 2007 Pro Plus licenses through our LEA.

 

They were asked whether they wanted the 2010 media kit, and at the time as they had no one in the know - who would not know that you get downgrade rights - they said they wanted Office 2007.

 

I've been told as the Office 2010 CALs were sold with an Office 2007 media they are now only Office 2007 CALs and cannot be used for Office 2010 (as the school chose Office 2007 media).

 

I ask as we've now got access to volume licensing through a third party retailer and I'd like to use these 2010 CALs to replace 2007 on some PCs of staff who can't get on with 07, but can with 10 at home.

 

Now was the LEA guy selling me some bumf information (perhaps in the hopes of getting a seperate Office 10 order), or is this MS practice that if you buy with a media kit, regardless of what is the current version, you get the version of the media kit.

If the school has purchased 2010 licences then that is what they have. The media makes no difference, it is just that, a CD. Going by your LAs logic if you have purchased them with no media you would have no licence.

Your licencing person knows nothing.

 

If you have an office 2010 regardless of what media you have it is a licence to install 2010.

Which is what I assumed. FOlks forget that the company who our LEA uses is that a company. Not a nice friendly government department, but a commerical entity out to make money.

 

At the time it wasn't worth the effort to fight it - he was not budging. With the other little debacle going on with user/device CALs I think it's worth a phone call in the morning.

Spoke to Ramesys, who resell onto my LEA. They also don't know why I was told this.

 

On the plus side I now have 8 Office 2010 CALs to use
