random logon errors

HI all

 

Every now and then i get users that cannot logon to our mac network all they get is this error message

 

"logging in to this account failed because an error occurred"

 

Nothing else, i have searched and searched the internet and the only info i could find was to do with the users not having access the their home drive (which they do) this problem is random and within a few days will fix its self but i need to be able to solve the issue asap. It does not appear to be the actual machine that they log on as the error message follows them to any machine they try, and other users can log on to the same machine without problem.

 

Any ideas?

Also do you have the Home dirs on an OS X Server? I'm not sure if this issue is present with Windows servers hosting Home dirs.

 

In some instances if your pupils and staff have 2 different shares for their home dirs, i.e. Staff_Homes for staff, Pupils_Homes for pupils, when one of them (staff in this example) login first, it can stop the pupil logging straight after. Only when the client is restarted does the login then work.

Where would i find the logs?

 

No the users mac home folder is located on the mac server, restarting the computer does not fix the issue.

Where would i find the logs?

 

You can view the log files by using the Console app. (utilities folder). Open up the left hand side column which shows the various logs. Logs are timestamped so look for the time the error occurred. You can check logs on the errant Mac and/or the Mac server.

rebooting the server seems to solve the issue???

Try this :-

 

Open the etc folder (hidden, so use "Go to Folder" and then /etc)

Edit the auto_master file

Put a # in front of the /Network/Servers -fstab line so it looks like this :-

# /Network/Servers -fstab

 

This stops the Mac from remembering the path to a previous user's H drive which causes this error.
