Hand Held Document Scanner

Does anybody know of any cheap handheld document scanners. One of our Assistant heads visited another school and saw something like this but seems to think the other school got them for around £30

A digital camera is probably as good.

Yes, digital camera, my phone has a document camera that can grab an A4 page in seconds in a perfectly legibal format and you often get better quality from a camera than a scanner. Just look at the way google and others digitise books, decent cameras and optics.

Am I the only person who remembers how awful handheld scanners were because you had to move them across the paper dead straight or the image would skew? The reviews on Amazon suggest this problem still exists.

My dad had one of these hand held scanners when I was growing up. They were brilliant because you could scan your face and watch it come up on the screen. But going back to what AngyTechnician said, they arent that good, if you move slightly then the image is distorted and if you move your hand too fast of too slow, the image will stretch or get compressed. use a flatbed scanner or as mentioned above... a camera.

I remember using one on a Mac LCII, 256 shades of mediocer gray and the requirement for many seconds of surgical precision to not skew the poor representation of the source matetial that it produced beyond recognition. That and it only managed A5 width.

 

Nostalga is not an issue when it comes to this and I would go for the camera every time.
