compress MS office documents open source

any one know of any software that will compress Ms office Docs like FILEminimizer Server - gain back data storage space on file servers. Reduce data transfer and storage costs. Accelerate backups. that's open source and will run server side..

It's not open source, but the free Office Migration Planning Manager from Microsoft will compress Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents by way of converting them into the new 2007/2010 Office file formats (DOCX, XLSX & PPTX).

 

You will need to read the documentation to find out the correct commands to use, but you can create a batch file to convert all of your Word files on your file server for example.

migrate them to odf or docx format. they are compressed.

You can write a server side script with openoffice to do this. probably can with msoffice too.

i will have a look at the MigrationPlanningManager as i have ppt files made by students that are over 100mb big.
