VMWare Player in Edu

is vmware player free for education

 

in the faq it says free for personal, non-comercial use but doesnt mention edu???

 

do we have to pay? if so is there a free alternative?

Not sure what education comes under, but the alternatives are Oracle VirtualBox and Microsoft VirtualPC.

I've used Virtualbox for ages and its been great. However the latest version (v4) seems to have a few problems booting to PXE (which is how I test deployments etc) so I would recommend version 3. VMware Player though is AWESOME and I've managed to get OSX 10.6.6 installed on that (bit of Hackint0sh going on there mind).

 

We have Microsoft VirtualPC installed in 2 ICT suites as one of our BTEC courses involves students learning about building, installing and repairing PC's. For that use its great.
