Thinkpoint virus

A friend of mine reckons he has two computers infected and that it won't allow either to boot, even in safe mode. I'm not convinced but I said I'd take a look. Does anyone know about thinkpoint. I've been too busy to google it but I will when I get home.

My dad's laptop had it recently... easiest spyware fix going fortunately

 

- taks manager

- kill hotfix.exe process

- install \ run MalwareBytes

- reboot

 

It's a rather dumb spyware product by modern standards... no rootkit luckily

This has developed a stage further. He dropped one of the machines off and it won't boot in safe mode. It gets as far as mup.sys. I opened it up and there's an ide and sata drive. I disconnected the ide drive and Windows fired up and resumed windows setup. I suspect that the sata drive is a data drive and he tried repairing the OS and instead has half installed windows onto this. So, is it a software or hardware fault on the ide drive. As it's apprently the same on two machines, I suspect a registry issue. I'm thinking I'll put the ide drive as a slave on an old machine and check it for viruses but I'd welcome any suggestions.

What a game this has been. I've run every sort of scanner and they've all found problems but not fixed the fault. I just agreed with my friend that it was going to have to be a rebuild when I thought on the of-chance I'd upgrade it to SP3. Seems to have done the trick.
