IE8 problem

HI

 

Please can someone help me. I have now upgraded to ie8 throughout the school and thats working great if a little slow to start except when a user logs on for the first time they get a message saying.

 

" A program on your computer has corrupted your default search provider"

 

Then they click on ok and they get a window to set it in, which people just close.

 

I have changed several things but have not find a cure. Has anyone got a fix for this that I could deploy through group policy.

I fixed the problem using the solution below:

 

This is from Kirb’s Musings:

 

1. Make sure IE 8 is closed then navigate to registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders

2. Add a new “Expandable String value” inside the above mentioned key with a value name of “AppData” and a value data of “%USERPROFILE%Application Data”.

3. Reopen IE 8 and see if you still get the error message.

 

I have never edited the registry, but I fool around until I was able to follow his instructions. I have Windows XP. First, I created a restore point in Windows to save the current registry. Then in the start menu, I clicked on "run" and typed in "regedit". This brought me to the registry. The registry shows "HKEY_CURRENT_USER". Click on the plus sign. This opens up a list. Scroll down to "Software" and click on the plus sign which opens up a list. Scroll down to "Microsoft" and click on the plus sign. Scroll down to "Windows""Explorer" and click on the plus sign. Scroll down to "User Shell Folders" and click on the folder. In the right window pane, you will see the headings "Name" "Type" and "Data". On my computer, there were two entries under name: (Default) and (Local AppData). In the name column, in the blank space on the line underneath "Local AppData", right click. A little box "New" will appear. Hover over the arrow in the "New" box and select "Expandable string value". Rename the Name to "AppData". Go to "Edit" and click on Modify. A box will open and allow you to type in “%USERPROFILE%Application Data”. I hope I given the instructions correctly. I've only done this once and I had to feel my way around to getting it done. It solved the problem for me. Good luck.

This allows you to set the search providers in gpo.

 

Now I have to work out how to stop programs changing the default provider. Has anyone any ideas.
