glennda Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Quick question - is Sims.net supported of Windows Server 2008 R2 (so X64?) Toby
matt40k Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 No, Windows XP Pro, Windows Vista\7 Pro\Ultimate, Windows Server 2003 R2 (either 32bit or 64bit) and Windows Server 2008 (both 32bit and 64bit) are supported as a SIMS server. Having said that Server 2008 R2 works alright and it's a matter of time before it's supported.
glennda Posted September 22, 2010 Author Posted September 22, 2010 Will go for just server 2008 x64 Thanks
Hecate Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 My response from fairly high up in the SIMS support hierarchy was yes since the June upgrade - we went with it on our new server
glennda Posted September 22, 2010 Author Posted September 22, 2010 We are having alot of trouble with the program being slow e.g when i use it at 10pm and there are no other users it takes 2 minutes for some things to come up - although the sql service is running around 50/60% cpu 1.6gb ram - so we are going to create a new server install sql and copy the sims data over to check to see if moving it to a new server solves the issue as our sims support team are out of ideas and there last idea broke our cashless catering system at the beginning of term. The reason i am going to use 2008 standard is just in test to check see if it is still slow then that rules out the origninal server as the cause

Hecate Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 (edited) But when the support desk manager says yes do you believe him ?- at least if it does go wrong I've got emails telling me it's OK so I know where to point the gun Edited September 22, 2010 by Hecate

Still like you say, if something goes wrong, at least you've got a good case to get a capita person to come fix it.
Sivadam Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 (edited) It is definitiely NOT supported for SIMS. It is supported for SLG - since June! Would one really want to risk using it if it is not supported ........ ???? Having said that - it does work! (well at least in one instance that I know of!). As for speed - it is rather quick - but you need a server with a spec to match! Edited September 22, 2010 by Sivadam
Darknight Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 This may be a silly question but is there a 64bit SIMS install package. whats the proceedure to install a fresh copy on a 2008 server and then move the database from the old server to new?
matt40k Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 Yes, SIMSINST is 64bit happy. Pretty much run it, restore the database, update the connect.ini and sims.ini. job done

You work more closely with Capita than I do so I accept your answer but I do have an email, not from the help desk but from a senior support manager in response to a request I sent up through my customer service manager for a definitive ruling, that server 2008 R2 is supported from the June upgrade so if it does fall over I know where to shoot
