Just dropped daughter off at uni and her network access wasn't working (I think she didn't pay enough attention when they passed out passwords :) ) so I rememberd that one of the features of Android 2.2 was that you can use your 'droid as a portable wi-fi hotspot generator :)

Switched it on and connected her laptop to it just like at home - easy peasy :)

And, I can use the the same technique at work to get around filtering issues in future :)

regards

Simon

PS It made me think of how do you big boys and girls stop your darling high school pupils from doing the same thing?

Each child gets searched at our place for phones etc at the start of the day (letters get sent to the parents at the start of the school year stating this will happen), nothing they can do to stop us (apart from obviously strip search etc). One instance a child stuffed her phone in her bra, we called her mum in to do the search, she was massively embarrassed about her mum coming in, and all the other kids heard the story, and as such, all valuables get handed in so they cant do it any more! :)

nope, children empty their bags on their desks and the form tutor goes through the equipment, they also make note of who doesnt have correct equipment (EG those without PE kit etc)

that does seem a bit excessive - we don't have any students which are that clever to realise they can but they don't have rights to install software - or change the proxy so even if they managed to connect through the phone IE will still be looking for our proxy

What if a student refuses to empty their bags?
