Hi All,

I am having a bit of trouble getting my head around the idea of what exactly is a 24 core multi-mode fibre optic cable. I know what multi mode is. However I do not fully understand what is meant by 24 core. Is it like having 24 individual fibres in one wire. If so how does each of these individual wires connect to the switches or media convertor and do they allow diffrent data to be carried down each of the cores.

Each connection to a switch requires 2 cores, that is a 24 core cable you have described i.e it has 24 fibre optic cables in a bundle in it.

The 24 cores will terminate on a patch panel (have a look here for some examples) Videk Online and, as @plexer says, you need 2 of them per connection (receive and transmit; normally just labelled Rx and Tx)

 

The idea of putting 24 cores in one cable is that you make it smaller - you can use one strong sheath to protect all 24 fibres instead of having 24 protective layers which would be very bulky
