when navigating to my comp/docs/explorer it takes 5 mins and trying to do anything else in that time is pointless.

When I got problems like this (strange server performance issues etc) I used to set up a server on a VM, make it a DC transfer roles etc from the ailign server. Once sure allwas done correctly, wipe the old one and reinstall from scratch. It's a day job, but if it needs to be done then it needs to be done.

Oh, and have you checked for disk errors? Always a good thing to look for when unexplained performace issues crop up.
