How to squid

Hi does anyone know of a nice how to, to try and install squid? Having some trouble findign one. Cheers

Install CearOS make sure you tick the Web Proxy (actually running Squid behind the scenes) option during install, it does all the rest. Just login through the Web interface to manage the proxy server. I also suggest you install the Content Filter & Protocol Filtering it will come in handy.

If you're a Linux user then it's probably easier to use it on Linux; if you want to use it on Windows then I wrote these notes quite some time ago - they helped me get it going!

But the TCP IP Stack sucks on Windows ..

if you just need a squid box with no security, there's minimal configuration required.

I suggest using a no-gui install of linux, that way, you don't get tonnes of things you don't need. I use the base install of the netinstall version of Debian, configure dual network cards. add squid and maybe bind9 for dns. Tell bind to talk to a more authorative dns server. Pretty much all you have to do in the squid config is set cache_peer and the acl related stuff.

If its just as simple as running squid on ubuntu, not joining it to a domain? ntlm auth for users?

Installing it on Ubuntu server (I didnt go for a GUI either) is as easy as apt-get install squid. Then a modify one or two lines like browolf said, cache_peer for upstream proxy etc, in the squid.conf and your up and running.

This is what we are using at the moment and it works very well indeed. The only thing it doesn't have is the ability to create groups for different levels of access to the internet and that is why we are soon to purchase a Smoothwall UTM1000 box from Gavin.

 

IPCop have a look hopefully it may be exactly what you are looking for.
