Game Servers: Typical specifications?

I've been a technician for a long time, so i know a fair amount about desktops. However i've never delt with servers much except in a networking aspect. I'm a gaming enthusiast and wanted to host my own game server a dedicated one.

 

So my question is, what is the typical specifications of a decent lag free game server?

Depends on what type of games you are hosting. The COD series need more ram than cpu and then steam servers require high cpu to ram.

I see, so a high CPU and RAM configuration is necessary for COD/Steam. Any idea what a decent spec would be for CoD MW2 for example?

COD MW2 doesn't use servers?

You're right there, but I have heard that they were going to do so soon, but i meant CoD MW sorry.

Typicaly each server uses 500 mb ram and a small amount of cpu.
