Patching Exchange Server 2007 SP1 into SP2 caveats ?

Hi All,

 

I'd like to upgrade my existing Exchange Server 2007 Std. SP1 + RU 3 into the latest Service Pack 2, but I'm confused and not sure if it can bring more benefits than harm :-(

 

when i click on the Windows update, It only shows:

 

1. Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x64
    
   
2. Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Rollup Update 9
   

 

Should I go ahead with the SP2 directly after the .NET Framework install ?

 

I also and always heard that there will be something broken after applying the patch to Microsoft Exchange Server, Can anyone share your experience here please of what to do after the SP2 install ? [I'm pretty sure that there is something won't work as expected :-|]

 

and of course if the upgrade is failed, I'll redeploy this server backup from Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 8.5.

I recall an Exchange Server 2003 thta would kill itself after SP2 was applied. The server just blue screen on boot. I rebuilt it and resoted from backup twice and full patched it both times, and each time the same result! In the end I just had it apply patches via WSUS, but never the service pack. Once I'd moved to Exchnage 2007 on a new box (the old one was a Dell Power Edge 2550) all was fine, but I always ensured that a full backup was taken before applying Exchange service packs!

I don't have a test env. with me as we are a medium office of 50 users.

 

Unfortunately this Exchange Server 2007 is installed in my DC + FSMO holder, the configuration is simple HT - CAS - MBx all in one server.

 

I've read so many "horror" stories in failed services here and there about upgrading with rollup and SP.
