Limit the number of characters in text box

Ok, so I'm sure this can be done but have no idea how.

 

We have an application form created in Word 2003 which can be downloaded.

I want to limit the number of characters that can be typed into a text box so applicants can't waffle on.

 

Any ideas how I do this ?

I don't know about a text box, but I'm fairly sure that a Field can have the input text limited to a certain number of characters. The advantage of using Fields is that the form can be locked so they can't edit the questions etc.
