Time and Logging on issues

Hi

 

Everything was fine then suddenely we are having groups of machines unable to log on because of server time difference.. yet there has been no change to the servers or PC's.. and the PC and servers have both the same time..

 

Any Idea why this is happening..

 

the bat script says NET TIME \\FSERVER1 /SET /YES

Is this over wired or wireless? Have you tried both and does it make any difference? Have you tried setting both the server and the client to a common external time server? Is it across all machines or a particular build (eg XP SP3, Vista, etc)

Good to see you've found the problem!

 

Ideally for time config you want workstations to synch to a domain controller (that's the default behaviour) and then each DC synchs to the PDC emulator (again, default) and then you configure the PDC emulator to synch with an external time source if necessary.

 

Incidentally, the "net time" command is deprecated - it was replaced in XP with w32tm which should be used. The equivalent command is:

 

w32tm /resync

 

Note that this would have to go in a machine startup script - ordinary users don't have the privilege to set the time. It actually shouldn't be necessary; as the time service starts up it will attempt to synchronise and logs if it's failed to do this.
