Compression Issue with Backup Exec 12.5-SP2

Hi All,

 

I m encountering compression problem during backup.

 

Hardware used

2 x HP DC530 running W2K3 with R2 SP2

2 x Hp storeage works ultrium-3 scsi 1/8 autoloader.

2 x backup exec 12.5 with sp2

 

Server A

1 x HP DC530 running W2K3 with R2 SP2

1 x HP utlrium-3 autoloader 1/8

1 x Adaptec SCSI Card 19160 ultra160 SCSI

1 x Backup Exec 12.5 with SP2

 

All drivers, bios and firmware updated to latest for tape drive and scsi card.

Device setting for backup using backup exec driver ( recommended by Symantec)

Three types of backup running every month

Daily with differential - Hardware Compression ( if available otherwise none)

Weekly full - Hardware Compression ( if available otherwise none)

Monthly Full - Hardware Compression ( if available otherwise none)

Compression enable on autoloader

 

Backing up server B,C,D,E,F

Problem encounter

 

No compression for all Backup

Compression Rate reading 1:1

 

Used different compression type ( None, software, hardware if available otherwise software and hardware if available otherwise none )

Still no compression.

 

Server B

1 x LSI Logic ultra 320 SCSI

1 x Backup Exec 12.5 with SP2

 

All drivers, bios and firmware updated to latest for tape drive and scsi card.

Daily with differential - Hardware Compression ( if available otherwise none)

Weekly full - Hardware Compression ( if available otherwise none)

Daily backup

Compression Rate reading 1.9:1

Weekly and monthly no compression

Compression rate reading 1:1

 

Tried a few diag.

 

Using HP LTT

Compression enable for both hardware

Compression rate reading 2.6:1 while backup 1200mb file using HP LTT

 

Using backup Exec tracer

Compression enable for both hardware

 

Solution needed

 

Anyone has a solution or know what is causing this problem.

I went to the extend to even replace the autoloader which has no compression at all.

According to Symantec support - Backup exec does not do compression it just send backup job to the hardware. All compression date are done on the hardware.

So i m at a lost right now. both server are performing the same thing but only one shows some compression. Help needed
