Yes, it depends very much on the game. However I spend quite a lot of time playing World of Warcraft. Which has multicore support.

 

Additionally the machine has Crossfire, thus to support Crossfire, a game must use multiple threads and therefore cores.

 

Finally I am expecting this machine to last me a good while, over which time, multicore support in games/apps is only going to get better. It's the way the tech is going.

 

Yeah totally agree with the last bit, I have an old Q6600 which I've had since it came out (gutted it dropped so low 3 months after I bought it!!) I bought it for games and just general working, I can run anything with anything else and it doesn't make a difference I can still run things at normal speed. Plus rendering in blender is so much quicker than my celeron 1.6 at work!!!

Aren't most games still single-threaded, or support two cores at most?

Not these days. Games like GTA IV make good use of all four. The game is a bit rubbish with a dual core processor. Using a graphics card which has 1GB RAM is advisable too.

Well here I am, posting on the new PC. I tried Win7 RC in and it didn't work out. There are no working Raid drivers for the Intel ICH10 Raid controller thats on the Asus P6T board.

 

Thus I'm using Vista64. Which works. I had to do some serious driver updates though to make it recognise my hardware. The Raid controller required me to have the drivers on a USB pen for the install process. The onboard sound and nic were not recognised, nor was the USB or PCIe bus. Or the ATI graphics card. So I had to update them post install.

sounds pretty normal for a fresh install to me, too bad W7 didn't work out tis good to play with. Def made the right choice with V64bit though (vs XP64) I havent looked back since.
