Using Visual Studio to create Sharepoint (WSS) workflows

Have many sharepoint users had a need to create custom workflows in VS?

 

I need to create a workflow that will modify permissions on an item dependent upon that state of various fields in a list. Eg when field_a=true then set permissions xyz and so on.

 

This tutorial seems to be going in the right direction of what I want: Enabling Data-Driven Permissions in SharePoint Using Windows Workflow Richard Seroter’s Architecture Musings

 

From what I've read, I think I'd also need to tweak this to run with elevated permissions as workflows usually run in the context of the user (right?).

 

I downloaded the WSS3 development image for Virtual Server and had a go at following the instructions on the blog. For someone that hasn't used VS2k8 or had any experience of developing workflows this was an up-hill struggle.

 

Before I persevere any more with this I was hoping someone could take a look at the sample code and just let me know whether it should run on WSS ok. I don't think there should be any MOSS-specific dependencies, but I had to remove a couple of lines from the VS SP WF template to get it to compile on a WSS machine as per: SharePoint ShareNotes ShareThoughts !!!: The type or namespace name 'Office' does not exist in the namespace 'Microsoft'

That sample code should run on WSS fine, there's no MOSS specific stuff in there except in the feature.xml file. You can just remove the workflow receiver entries and it will still work.
