Has anyone got a software/excel spreadsheet/access database that I could have a look at to see how you do your hardware inventory?

Spreadsheets take too much time to do all the updates.

All new purchase orders we now og in our helpdesk: Web help desk (free for one tech): This has no built in assett discovery.

For asset discovery we've used the following:

Spiceworks (free) Discovery is initiated from the server on a schedule.

OCSI/GLPI (free) this uses a client on the workstation to update the database so updates are more reliable if the scheduled update might miss PCs that are off at the discovery time.

 

We're just looking again if anyone else has any other suggestions
