What shall i install on my PC? - Just for fun.

I have DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11 on disk here, I found them on the fireplace...

It's about 20 floppy disks, so whilst it was slightly tempting to install them, I couldn't find a floppy drive.

 

There's nothing wrong with DOS and Windows:

I miss the days you could exit to dos, not be limited to this cheap shell they call cmd. Did enjoy adding mouse, sound and cd support, for all those "advance 3d" games that only ran in DOS.

stacker, christ. I remember my old man getting bored, went round to his one night and he'd been playing with a (then huge) 840mb hard drive. He'd got just over 2gb out if it!

He tried ever so hard to actually try and fill it up in that state but couldn't find enough files and got bored of copying

 

Reminds me of my first PC - Dell 486, Evergreen 586 Overdrive chip, 16mb ram and a 320mb hard drive. I used full compression on the hard drive to get 640mb out of it. Add to that Windows 95 OSR2, IE5, AOL and a US-Robotics 14.4k modem and you had internet page loading times that rivaled that of the ZX Spectrum tape loader!

 

The constant use of virtual memory on a compressed hard drive is a wonderful sight to behold!

Back at the OP, I suggest going windows 7 if you like to play IRL as opposed to VMs. Go 64 bit if you're feeling brave - My copy still seems nice and responsive.

 

 

FWIW, I remember doublespacing my c:\ as an inexperienced 13 year old and then wondering where all the performance went in my amazing 133 rig
