Hi gang,

Im in need of some help and advice. It bothers me that kids here download and rip cd's on to the network.

things of concern

ilegal

Virus

takes up lots of space

kids will download the same track more than once.

My idea is to buy those Now thats what you call music ## and put them into an area on the network. this way I can keep track of what we have and delete what ever is not supposed to be on the system.

but to do this we need a sg6 licence.

from what I understand:

we pay mcps £500 a year up front, and then every quater we do an audit to see how many .mp3, .midi etc files we have.

mp3 files cost 10p per sound track

midi files cost 15p per sound track

depending how ever many we have in total, so for example we have 10 mp3 files on the network that would be a £1. that is deducted from the £500

this way kids can use the audio, safely, securely, and legally.

Have I got this correct?

Is anyone doing the same/similar thing and can offer advice?

any advice would be greatfully appreciated

thank you

Erm, with a view to them doing what with them? this could be viewed as distribution, which would be illegal

(up to 30 secs) 3p

Audio-visual clips

(up to 30 secs) 3.5p

Audio only tracks

(up to 5 mins) 10p

Audio-visual tracks

(without lyrics - up

to 5 mins) 11p

Karaoke tracks with still

images & lyrics 12p

Karaoke tracks with moving

images & lyrics 13p

MIDI files 15p

How does the payment process work?

Application form and payment sent to MCPS ---> MCPS process form and payment ---> Clearance granted.

What does the scheme exclude?

Visual images of a sexual, violent or political nature. Advertisements or sponsorship messages. Premium Products (please refer to the SG3 scheme). Use of music subject to First Licence Refusal. Implication of approval or endorsement by the writer or performer of the music. Online distribution. Recordings of shows or excerpts from shows. Arrangements and adaptations.

It's meant for midi/karaoke and excerpts.

those mp3s can be up to 30seconds.

And anyway these are for made to order products - doesn't cover you in a blanket, its PER PRODUCT.

And you'd still need permissions from the copyright owner.

this really isn't what you want......
