Redirected printers appearing on print server

Hello All,

 

I've set up a dedicated printer server, ACSSPOOL006, a Windows Server 2008 virtual machine, and installed as many of our printers on it as I can get a network connection to. For some reason, Windows keeps creating "redirected" printers on the server. So, say I created a printer called SenICTLasColA3, gave it a description and shared it. When I look at the server now I see a printer called "SenICTLasColA3 on acsspool006 (redirected 2)".

 

The shared printers list still stays the same, so anyone connecting to the server to use a printer still sees the same list of printers, but it's getting a tad confusing with all these random extra printers appearing on the server. Anyone any idea why this happens?

I assume that you've (or some else) has logged on to the server using RDP or TS. To stop this from happening you have to it turn off.

Yep, if someone remotes in to the server, the printers on their machine also get added to the list of printers on the print server.

 

Annoyingly, it also adds a warning entry to the system event log, when you log off the server, just to say that that printer is no longer available.

I had a problem a few weeks ago, logging onto one of our Windows Server 2000 servers, it added my printers to that server and crashed the spooler.exe

 

got a patch though and fixed it

You can change this behaviour in the RDP client by clicking options, Local Resources tab and unticking printers under Local devices. You can also prevent this in group policy on the machine here:

 

Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Terminal Services -> Client / Server Data Redirection : “Do not allow client printer redirection”
