QuickBooks on Terminal Services

Hello All,

 

Does anyone have any experience / help / tips / advice with regards to running QuickBooks 2008 on Windows Server 2003 / 2008 Terminal Services? Coming to re-install a workstation, I find that our current version of QuickBooks (2002) no longer installs as its registration server has been switched off. Hence we'll be needing to upgrade to a new version. We only have 3 or 4 people who'll be using it, so I was thinking to run it under Terminal Services - that way it'll be available from home over an encrypted VPN but with the important (and confidential) information staying on our servers and being backed up properly. Anybody else done this?

Hello Pearson,

 

Installing QuickBooks over terminal servers is fairly easy and there are a number of businesses doing it. If you need any assistance, let me know.

 

I belong to a company named Real Time Data Services that hosts QuickBooks and we have several clients who have opted for Quickbooks hosting as it is much cheaper to pay for Hosted QuickBooks than to do it yourself on a local infrastructure. Hosting also allows for a 24x7 technical support from a team of specialists who have in depth knowledge of QuickBooks issues on a Windows 2003 server. The backups are done daily and security is also taken care of by the specialists.

Not yet, the plan is to change over at the end of August. QuickBooks will store its files on our applications server and run on the same Terminal Services server as the SIMS client.

Update: all seems to be working fine. I set up the QuickBooks file server on our Windows application server. QuickBooks file server seems to require both its files to be available in a Windows share and for a port to be opened on the server for clients to connect, almost like some developer was asleep during the lecture on client-server applications and decided to do the actual file sharing one way and file locking seperatly. The server does, seemingly, run on RedHat and, therefore, probably CentOS, but with the whole Windows share thing I decided it'd be easier to run this on Windows.

 

The client (QuickBooks Pro Edition 2008) itself seems to be running okay under Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services. Printing causes problems - the only way to add a printer seems to be to make a user administrator, log them on, add a printer, log them off and make them non-administrator again. A palavar but do-able with only 4 users, but obviously this would need sorting properly if there were more users.
