Hi there

I've tried to get a game to work - Ancient Egyptians Senet Game, without much sucess. I had to install Shockwave Player as I was asked to. Now I keep getting a message saying 'Missing Shockwave decompression XTRA'

Can anyone help please? :(

First thing to try would be to run the software as an administrator to see if it works that way. A lot of these old nasty bits of software attempt to write a couple of DLL files to the system32 directory on startup which of course windows rightfully blocks.

If it is that problem then the way I fixed it was having the system32 folder open when I launched as an admin. This way I could see the two files that had been added to the end of teh list out of alphabetical order. You just need to have those two files on every pc already so that it does not need to copy them. I did this with an MSI if I remember correctly.

Edit: Just a note, those files are helpfully deleted by the application when it is closed if it has put them there so you need to copy them to somewhere safe while the program is running in the background. When you put them there manualy the program sees that it did not have to put them there and so leaves them alone.

As SYNACK says run the problem software as administrator.

If you have mandatory profiles, see this thread: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows/18661-creating-small-mandatory-profile.html

You may need to make one of the profile users an administrator and the profile not mandatory, run the program and then switch back. This should leave it working for everyone on the profile.

Ihave, on occasion, had to re-install shockwave to sort this problem (I usually get it with the BBC website)

Thanks for that guys.

Apparently the problem was with Shockwave Player.

A file named SWADCMPR.X32 needed to be downlaoded from Adobe site and placed in System32/macromed/shockwave10/extras

This did the trick.

So beware if you are asked to download the latest version of shockwave player!
