I have Macromedia Studio 8 set up on my Windows XP Clients on my Windows 2003 Server Network.

When Users log in, their default path for opening and saving files is the My Documents folder.

I am needing to change this to the users home drive, in my case is Z:

Anyone have any ideas if this can be done?

Doesn't the My Documents folder point to their home drive?

I'll look at our script tomorrow as we customised the location I'm sure.

Well that was my next question. Up until now I have used GP to force Microsoft Apps to point directly to the Z: when opening and saving.

I used GP today to redirect the contents of my documents to their home directory - but it isn't true redirection - it appears to sycronize when a user logs off - and I don't really want that as it takes forver if a user has a large amount of files.

What I need is for it to appear as if it is being saved in my documents - but actually saving direct to their homedrive - the syncronization is the problem for me.

There's a couple of different ways to achieve what you're after with the documents, you can use actual AD Folder Redirection or in our case, we use a simple reg frag which modifies Shell Folders and User Shell folders so that on "desktop" workstations it makes My Documents point to N: (home drive) or on laptops C:\MCCDATA\%USERNAME%\My Documents so they can co-exist without exploding.

Can you tell me how you have achieved that? I have done it via GP on the server, and folder redirection. But it insists on marking each file with a silly blue icon  and does the redirection which everyone  at...

That's Offline Files. Just disable that for the relevant groups of machines (Computer Configuration \ Admin Templates \ Network \ Offline Files)

The key one is 'Enable or Disable Use of Offline Files Feature' - set to Disabled. Certain others I also disable just to make sure.

You may want to enable that for certain machines though (Teacher's laptops for example).

Does this have to be done on Group Policy on the individual machine?

Or can this be done on the Server's GP?

Cheers for all the help on this one.

It can be done on Server Group Policy and assigned to any OU.

For example, we have a policy for student PCs which disables Offline files, and we assign it to Curriculum desktops and laptops.

So I have just changed the first option in GP "Allow or Disallow use of the offline Files feature" - hopefully this will do the trick.

I've also got a folder redirect from my documents to the users homedrive, so if the user changes a file in my documents that change is reflected on the homedrive immediatly?

AFAIK, but you may have to restart each machine to be sure that the revised policy is picked up properly.

Yes because My Documents doesn't exist as a seperate entity, it is merely a pointer to Z:\ albeit fairly transparently.
