Hi I would like to show the usernames not the full name in MOSS 2007. I have imported from AD and as you can imagine it can resolve the full names of the user but I want it to show the usernames off people (preferably staff) so that when Staff add documents or announcements it doesnt show their full name.

Out of the box with MOSS, you should be able to set what the display name is set to in the "User profile and properties" section of the Shared Services section of Central Admin. Technet has more details at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263503.aspx.

Alternatively you can use the SharePoint object model to set it to whatever you want. I've done this in a few schools to have display names like Mr Smith, rather than the AD display name.

Is there any way you could be more specific, I am at the profile properties page but can in no way see how I would stop full names being shown. First name, Last name and Name are all a property but i cannot delete or edit any of them.

In SharePoint Central Admin go to

Share Services Administration: SharedServices > User Profile and properties

Click View Profile Properties at the bottom

Open the drop down for Name and select Edit

Under Property Import Mapping select "Enter field to map: (Clear to unmap)"

Type samaccountname in the text field

OK to save. You'll then need to run a full import and then wait for the Profile Synchronization to run (by default hourly).
