Creating a second DNS Server?

How do you guys set up a second server as an additional DC on Windows Server 2003 and configure it as an additional DNS server whilst still using the existing directory partition?

 

The reason i ask is the last time i did this i used the dcpromo option and when it asked to configure the server as a dns server as well i chose yes. So when it came back up as a dns server i was expecting it to be using the DNS zone created byt the first server. Unfortunately what it had done was to create its own zone and then i had two directory partitions. They were replicating fine as far as i could see but was getting constant messages in the event viewer about there being two directory partitions and one should be deleted.

 

This was done on a server 2003 r2 standard edition. IIRC the last time i set this up on a server 2003 standard edition it went fine with none of the errors i am seeing now.

 

Whether its me or not just getting muddled up i don't know.

1) Install DNS. Do not setup a partition with the wizard.

2) Wait

 

 

After a while the zones should be copied to the second server automatically (at least if it's a DC)

 

Or if you are doing it during a promotion then you can just cancel the zone creation when it pops up too

Thats interesting. I don't think it says to do it that way in the MSCE books?

 

I may be wrong though.
