itgeek Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Hi, I’ve been asked to deploy Visual Studio in one of the IT rooms, but I’m a little cautious as I’m not sure what level of access the students will have or what they’ll be able to run. Has anyone deployed Visual Studio for students before? If so, how did you approach it and were there any issues? Thanks
TechMonkey Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Does it have to be Visual Studio or could it be VS Code? Very different beasts.
itgeek Posted March 9 Author Posted March 9 Good question I will go and find out. Have you deployed VS code and how did it go?
MartinByard Posted March 9 Posted March 9 We deploy both Visual Studio Community Edition and VS Code. Visual Studio is deployed with a standard set of workflows and plugins installed that we have been asked to include, but also with the reg policies in place to enable non-admins to update and modify it as needed. Powershell Snippet of that bit: Write-Host "Creating VisualStudio Setup Reg Key" if(!(Test-Path "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\VisualStudio\Setup")){ New-Item -Path HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\VisualStudio -Name Setup -Force } Write-Host "Creating AllowStandardUserControl Reg Value" New-ItemProperty -Path HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\VisualStudio\Setup -Name AllowStandardUserControl -PropertyType DWORD -Value 2 -Force VS Code is deployed with a standard set of plugins copied into the Program Files folder so that they are installed and present for all users. 1
TechMonkey Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Yep, VS Code was a lot easier. Visual Studio Community we would inevitably end up having to manually add something and was a bit picky. That may have just been the python plugin, but something like if you ran it one way it would generate errors but ran it another it would run fine.
Wizard101 Posted March 9 Posted March 9 (edited) VS Code was simple, We put it on a Student Image. Extensions/Addons are blocked by defaults. If they require extensions for their work they have the send in a request, we then check if the extension and add a rule on a firewall for those extensions. (You need the actual cdn path to where VScode is downloading it from, haven't had to do this in a while so cant remember from the top of my head). Probably some better ways to do this. dhicks Posted March 9 Posted March 9 1 hour ago, itgeek said: Have you deployed VS code and how did it go? I just got it working the other day on our pupil desktop development environment, but I haven't tried using it for anything yet so I probably need to add more plugins and so on, so this thread is very handy. It turns out VS Code is an Electron application, so based on Chromium, so to get it running inside our Docker container desktop environment I had to add the "--no-sandbox" option
laurencejones Posted March 18 Posted March 18 Has anyone managed to get Visual Studio Community Edition deployed using Intune please? Currently resorting to manually installing this in IT Suites, but then battling with updates for it.
