Weird bug when saving an excel file to google drive via google drive for desktop.

Whenever changes are made to an excel spreadhseet, the document saves, fully syncs correctly. but then you open the spreadsheet again the next day, those saved changes are gone. the only way to get the saved changes back, is to go to google drive and download the file via file version  histrory, then copy and paste the data  it back in. 

 

i know the solution is "just use google sheets" but im intreiged to know why this happens, and why it only happens sometimes.
