there are some very important security fixes in 1.5.6 has anyone updated from 1.5.3 to 1.5.6?

 

i want to upgrade my site but i don't want to break anything, will there be an update forth coming?

Just have a go in a test environment. I would make the new 1.5.6 install then import your old database into the new install.

Have upgraded our site without problems (touch wood).

If your worried install Joomla Pack on your site and do a backup. I have used this extensively and it simplifies the backup of Joomla and the SQL database.

i don't have a place to test it, but i backed everything up and when ahead with the upgrade and everything went fine, as far as i can tell anyway.

I have just tried to upgrade my Joomla install to 1.5.7 but each time i go back to the site i get a blank page.

 

The process i went through was:

 

download the 1.5.3 to 1.5.7 update/patch file

backed up all files and folders in the webroot dir

Copied the 1.5.7 files and folders

Pasted the 1.5.7 folders over the files in the webroot except templates

Went to the Site in safari and got a blank page.

 

According to the Joomla docs i have read you just upload the new stuff into the area where you have the old stuff. But this doesn't seem to work. Have i missed something?

double check you configuration.php file.

The update doesn't have any configuration.php files in there so doesn't overwrite it. But i checked it anyway and nothing seems wrong. If i replaced the original files without overwriting the configuration.php all is fine again. I have checked the permissions and those seem fine too. I have also propagated the permissions through the structure as well just to make sure.

 

Am i over-writing files needed for the template? I am not sure where all the files are stored for this. I know that the images folder is not over-written so thats not a problem and i leave the templates folder out as i mentioned earlier.

 

I think that the updating of Joomla needs a little more clarification as it seems that you can't just overwrite the documents in the Webroot as stated. This is what i am doing and it ain't working unless it's just me.

I feel a bit of a tit now

 

I have now managed to update my site. I must have been copying over some files that were still needed in one of the other folders. Which ones I don't know but to assist me i used rsync to sync the differences between the files. How this works i'm not too sure. I don't know whether it copies the actual files or what???

 

Anyhow the Joomla admin says it is v 1.5.7

 

For those like me that are afraid of the terminal, you can download rsync and a GUI for it. It's called RsyncX and works quite well. Easy to use as well.

 

I forgot to mention I was using OS X 10.5.4?

The package will be updated in the next two days i have 1 or 2 things i have to check and then test the new modules and we will be good.

just to bump this thread and so people know there are no hacks or abnormal moduls in this package so you can update the package with joomla goto there website joomla.org and download the patch do a backup of your site first and then just copy over the top if you select the correct patch ie 1.5.4-1.5.6 for example you will not have to delete the install folder. and on this matter please insure you delete the instal folder as renaming is a major secuarty risk as all some will need to do is randam addressing ie "www.wesite/instalationold/index.php" and this will bust the installthere is a bit more to it than that but just renaming is a very bad idea Edited October 19, 2008 by alonebfg
