UI Gateway in Schools

Hi all

 

Curious whether anyone is using a UniFi Gateway in school for there firewall/content filtering (CyberSecure Enhanced ) and Identity with AD integration for VPN/WiFi etc?

We have 4 EdgeMAX edge router firewalls.  I hate them with a passion, and I general try not to use the word hate casually.

Now I will caveat them with I haven't had any training on them and we don't have any support as they were here when I joined and the company that installed them was long gone.

UI is horrible, reporting is barely there and it just seems overly complicated.

 

Saying that, it does seem to stop any scans and we don't have to touch it much. Looking to replace with Fortinet if I get the funding, or removing them and relying on the Smoothwall firewall.

I personally have never dealt with one for filtering, but given non EFG / UDM pros barely handle layer 3 without collapsing, I'd not add inspected traffic and vpns to one. 

 

I feel you need a filtering engine, dedicated but if kit to be close to compliant. There's a lot of half baked efforts in firewall/gateway devices that does not really match what schools need. 

 

At a push, a fortigate does, but it's as flexible as steel.
