Host Server CPUs

What are people's thoughts on the type of CPUs we should be looking at for new Virtual Hosts.

 

Hosting Max 2 VMs in the cluster

 

2 x hosts

 

Running Windows Server 2025.

Well you probably still shouldn't be using 2025.... still issues that haven't been ironed out, even if you aren't using them as your DC.

Just stick to known quantities, dual xeon silvers will be more than sufficient for the majority and don't skimp on the RAM. It's always good to overspec, but at the same time how many servers might you expect to lose in coming years with increased cloud usage?

Check the licencing - if it's all on core count/thread count then get CPUs with less cores but higher speed per core, so your getting more bang for your buck out of each core licenced.

 

Given how moronic the licencing is now I would even consider single CPU rigs now.

Thanks for the comments so far, this is not for deployment this year, in the next 12 months or so (fingers crossed) the issues will be resolved with Server 25.

 

Probably use education Datacentre so cost 'should' be OK. Although who knows...

Last refresh went with AMD Epyc 9224's. Seriously impressed.

 

Overkill for your scenario though.

What are your 2 VMs going to be doing, what are your licencing constraints (if you're looking at datacenter, are you paying per core, for example), what is your backup system, and what is your infrastructure need?

 

Difficult to recommend unless we have an understanding of need. I'm sure a dual Epyc 9224 with 1TB of RAM will be amazing, but could sit 99% unused if you're only hosting a DC and a file server.
