Xbox 360 Store to Close July 29th 2024

Exactly as the thread title says, the Xbox 360 store will be shuttering its doors at the end of July next year and you will no longer be able to purchase titles - https://www.theverge.com/2023/8/17/23835636/microsoft-xbox-360-store-closure-july-2024

They are keeping some services available, such as online play, and you will still be able to play any downloaded games still

It is a little vague still as to whether you will be able to download previously purchased titles to the 360 though (I think not though), but does say you can download them to an Xbox One etc. using backwards compatibility.

My advice would be to fit the largest drive you need to store any online purchases you have made and get everything you can downloaded. If, like me, you have an old 360 and more than a few purchases in the store, then I would advise doing this, then putting it back into storage!

For those games that still need a Xbox 360 to play them and they stop the ability to download them, you'd need to get a physical copy of the game.

 

This all ties in with the fact that we don't truly own our purchased online games via store fronts, we are at the mercy of the platforms as to how long we can use them.

Indeed, and I suspect that Xboxes with abandonware on them will become quite collectable. I wonder if we'll see a repeat of this kind of thing:

I don't know whether that is good news or bad news for me. At least I hope they'll provide some discounts, because my nephew wants an Xbox, and maybe it's a chance to get him one.

I like the design, but I have to admit that the only reason I got a Series X was for the 4k Blu-Ray player and have very few Xbox games on disc now.

Well, I should consider it, too. At least, it will definitely save a lot of space in my entertainment unit. I have dozens of games, and some of them aren't really working anymore. Some discs are scratched by kids, so I can't play them anymore. So, I should ask Santa to bring me one on Xmas.

If you have a 360 and have not yet got an Xbox One or Series X , it may well be time to download all of your purchases whilse you still can as they haven't given a cut off date for this facility to be removed.

 

As a Series X owner, I must say that it's a terribly dull time to be a console owner atm, and mainly play older titles!

I can only imagine that there si someone out there was trying to download the entire store like they did with the Wii U and DS.

You'd need a SAN to store it all on though!
