MIS in EU/world

Does anybody know what MIS/SIS/SMS (whatever you wanna call them) are used in countries abroad?

There are loads that are used in New Zealand:

MUSAC Student Manager - use it and it is rubbish

Integris - heard that it is rubbish

eTap - heard good things apart from the amount of bandwidth that it uses

KAMAR

PC School

SchoolMaster

For the Middle-east there's: eduSwift, Administrator's Plus (the Rediker Software Student Management System) and Skoolee Tools, just to name a few. Apart from that there must be hundreds out there, just in the Northants area, I know of 4 different ones

In the middle east particularly, you'll find lots of little programs, as there is no fixed system, and the local schools compared to international / english speaking will all do their own thing. There is lots of influence from american companies also, so you could look at a wide range of SIS companies - blackboard, Follett is a new player in the international market, but big in the US.

 

In terms of british companies, other than Capita, you'd have Double First, Pearson Phoenix, WCBS. iSAMS also offer for independent schools. Not sure of Serco and i don't think Scholarpack is ready just yet. RM should, we used to have them. Bromcom would, but they are really quiet these days.

 

I even found an app, called TeacherPal the other day, that practically lets a teacher create their own mini MIS on an ipad. It wouldn't be all inclusive, but was pretty cool, though takes a lot of manual config to set up.

At the risk of ressurecting a pretty dead thread, but in the interest of complete responses

 

We've dabbled in the foreign markets here and there, France, Australia, the U.S.

It's very much like Vik says though as their are no fixed systems and that they are very different legislatively so the needs of the overseas education sector are significantly different than that of the UK market. So it does sort of lend itsself towards the small independent software supplier who has the agility to adjust the product to local requirements. This is also the reason you'll see the bigger companies supplying independent foreign schools, because they have the flexibility to adapt to the software rather than vice versa.

 

That said however our MIS does have a very real overseas element.

Anywhere that a Bromcom school has a field trip AND a browser capable device, they can and do register the kids. Does that count as a foothold in foreign climes?

Most the development is done in Europe now isn't it? Shame most software companies are doing this, letting the UK economy down. Still suppose cost savings to public sector.

Yeap, I only know integris from second hand reports but from what I heard is needed a specific version of Windows 2000, yes 2000 with a specific patch level to function. I imagine it has progressed but I don't think that is has so far. The other options are MUSAC - a university introduction to programming course run amouck using Access and text file transactions ( yea I know I have had to deal with the problems of its implementation first hand ) or etap, web based and tied to 1997 linux ideals and site design.

 

Honestly I am suprised that we are not using traction engines in this country to generate power given the quality of the code we end up using for a SMS/MIS system.

 

Currently about two thirds of the country is enjoying the benifits of 1GB/s net while the rest of us languish on 1mb/s or so. To sum up South Auckland (the largeist city area by population in NZ) is Africa... No one cares about africa/south auckland.
