As an admin I need to be able to search students OneDrive's to find 'lost' files or investigate a bullying etc incident. I have created a group 'OneDrive Admins' and added myself (I am also a global admin of Sharepoint/365 generally). I have added this group as 'site collection administrator' to a users site.

I can open and browse the site, I can see the group listed as an 'Owner' on every file/folder in the users OneDrive, BUT searching never returns anything.

yes it's rubbish, even if you boot yourself into a users onedrive, searching... searches your own.

The supported way to do this is via the search/compliance centre & just set the filter to everything. The nasty way is just resetting the users password & logging on as them...

I find it does search the users OneDrive, but it only returns in the results files that have been shared in some way (Shared to anyone, not me specifically).

this explains it, but it would be nice for education to be able to bypass this on student accounts....harmful content, child protection blah blah etc etc

We can bypass this with our Barracuda cloud-to-cloud backup, but admittedly that will only suit a few here.
