Adding Ruckus R500 AP to (Ancient) ZoneDirector?

Hi all.

 

Not long into the job at a shiny new place and looking to add another AP to our old Ruckus system. Bought myself a R500 AP to bolt on but for the life of me can't get it to provision in the ZoneDirector. And lord knows I'm trying.

 

Furthest I've been able to get is for the ZoneDirector to "see" it enough to approve it, but that's it, I can't then configure it from there. If I elect it in the list (from Configure > Access Points) it tells me "This Access Point is not approved/joined yet. Please connect it to proceed configuration." But I have already approved it.

 

Not too hot on the (weird) Ruckus cli but have set the director IP to the IP of the ZD, which it seems to "take" but then can't seem to get any further. I'd assume it'd need the scg setting (with "set scg ip x.x.x.x" <-- being IP of the ZoneDirector) but trying that gets me "The command is either unrecognized or incomplete. To view a list of commands that you can run from this context, type '?' or 'help'."

 

I know this is super super old now and ready for the bin. However it is all we've got until I get a little breathing space to overhaul the WiFi.

 

Just on the slim chance that anyone passing is an absolute Jedi with ancient Ruckus systems I'd dearly love to get this AP plumbed in and working!

Hi, @JRA I will certainly try to help- the first question would be do you know what firmware you're running on your ZD? The R500 should work on most versions unless it hasn't been upgraded in a really long time. I know it works on 9.9. I can check back further if needed. If you're running other R500s on your network then this shouldn't be an issue.

 

The second would be - do you have spare AP management licenses? The ZD license threshold will need to match or exceed the number of APs you're looking to manage, including the one you're looking to add.

 

Might be worth resetting the AP to standalone code as it could have to come to you in Unleashed or SmartZone code - to do so you will be to factory default it - paperclip for 10 seconds on the hole at the bottom near the power cable. Download the standalone code from the Ruckus support site. Upload that via the AP webpage (find the AP IP via DHCP). Once the AP has restarted, you should see the AP ready to be onboarded on the ZD dash. If not enough licenses it should show an error message stating this.
