We have a Google workspace/domain - is was setup over 10 years ago and I have nothing to do with it but is used for just finance dept.

We have a domain name assigned to it - again I have no dealing with this.

We (finance) are now being promoted to choose between personal or business.

As I’ve never used Google I need to ask a couple of questions.

If they choose personal, I take it we won’t be able to managed account etc

If using personal, they they still use the domain they have?

I’m thinking choose business to be on the safe side but can someone more knowledgeable about Google let me know please.

Cheers

Did you set this up as a Google for Education domain?

I have no idea, was done some time before my arrival - looking at the Admin Console, it was created Feb 2013, but doesn't tell me if Edu or Bus. - How can I find how it was setup?

 I've been here since Nov 2014 and up until last week, this was the first time I knew about this google workspace.

Apparently, it was created with the intention of going down the google route, but then when Office 365 came around, they jump on this but the Finance department have been using it for some time and are reluctant to change, as they would need to change/inform lots of people.

And now I'm getting a headache thinking, could I transfer the domain over to 365 and put various rules in place to the domain keeps working........

It'll be a free basic 10 user one. They were going to kill it, now they're saying if you're not a business you can still use it for free.

Either convert it to Edu, probably a bad idea. Or better, setup a real Edu domain Workspace for your school and move everything over to that

I'm guessing it must be setup as Business. - Doesn't help I have never touch Google Workspaces until this morning

Currently it is showing as G Suite Legacy - When I look at the upgrade options, under Get More Services - only Business Workspaces are available for switching.

Under Google Workspace for Education - It shows an Not available to purchase.

Google Workspace for Education: Teaching and Learning Upgrade is not available for purchase with your current Google Workspace subscription.

Thankfully there only 4 (including my new admin account) active on this workspace.

Might have to get them to subscribe to Standard Business Workspace short term, while I look at possibly moving the domain name over to Office 365 and export mail from the gmail accounts.

Unless there is a way to migrate everything over to an Educational Workspace....

Thanks for the help @paulkerton - it is very much appreciated :D
