Exchange email ports

Still have an exchange 2019 server, yes in 2022!

 

 

Anyways, the company has decided to stop using port 25 and I have been asked to see if we can send and receive emails on port 587 and 465? if I am correct

 

 

Can this be done?

 

This will be configured on a Exchange 2019 Server.

We have moved to a Virgin Media Business and we get an error when trying to port forward port 25 on TCP but when on UDP works first time.

 

So I can use port 25 but only on UDP so is it possible to use port 25 In kahoots with port 587?

Yep,

 

We can’t move to Office 365 yet but plan to in the next 2 years or so as we have a lot of data and don’t have the time to change over

VM business block port 25 so I need to be able to send mail as we can’t as port 25 is blocked on Virgin Media’s network

You can change the ports yes, but if the servers sending you emails can't connect on port 25 like they expect they won't know to try another port and you won't get the emails.

What if I used port 25 on UDP and port 587 as the tcp and UDP?

That's not how it works - If you have port 25 blocked you can't host an exchange server without having a smart host doing the relaying for you instead.

I think the port thing has been answered, but I want to unpick the whole migration to M(O)365. So my first thought is data usage in my experience rarely goes down, but more interesting to me is if your talking Mailbox migration then the bulk of this work is done behind the scenes when migrating mailboxes the mailbox is synced and then you pull the trigger to complete the migration the user should not have any real down time (they will have to restart their mail client). If your going to do it you can start batching those migrations whenever. Edited June 13, 2022 by HPlum78
