Bandwidth question

This is probably an obvious question, but I just wanted to be sure. The school currently has a 300/1000 leased line. Does this mean it should be able to download 300mbs and upload 300mbs simultaneously, or is bandwidth shared between the two? I suspect the latter, but just wanted to be sure!

With our customers its both ways, same speed at the same time.

 

The numbers mean means you are 300Mbps over a 1Gbps bearer. A leased line is typically both ways, same speed, same time, however can vary from supplier to supplier. We can apply policies to traffic in either direction, so worth checking with your provider as it can vary.

Every line I've used (from various suppliers with various backhaul (Virgin vs OpenReach), it's been synchronous i.e. download and upload at that speed at the same time. So yours as 300/1000 would be a 1Gb capable circuit limited to 300Mbps up and 300Mbps down. Speed testing depends on other usage, and any contention between your ISP network and the Internet so might not show the full 300.

Yes, EAD (the underlying Openreach product)is full duplex. https://www.openreach.co.uk/cpportal/content/dam/cpportal/public/images-and-documents/home/help-and-support/sins/documents/SIN_492.pdf the kit in the exchange and upstream should be full duplex too.

Thanks all, trying to identify the bottleneck in our network, with the answers above, I don't think it's the line.
