I need help. A DT teacher came back with the following:

 

As part of their work in Design Technology, Year 6 will be designing and making an alarm (using their scientific knowledge of circuits and switches) to warn them of a natural disaster eg earthquake, flood. The curriculum states that the design needs to incorporate a programmable element perhaps that will operate the switch to activate the alarm. I really need some expert advice with this as I need to purchase the correct equipment.

 

The teacher is not IT literate. Has no programming knowledge whatsoever and I really need it to be easy as possible for them to deliver to a class of 30 children.

 

Any input will be gratefully appreciated.

Not that I've ever seen that in a curriculum, but if that's really what they're after the two options that spring to mind would be makey makey boards for scratch, microbit or flowol potentially?

 

Thinking like when water rises to X amount it'll complete the makey makey circuit, or vibrations will hit two contacts etc at the very base level

Flowol looks like it could tick all the boxes. Is it easy to use?

 

I used when I was a primary school kid, so it should be fine.

Use those micro:bits schools got for free, web based programming, can detect shaking, or add some wires to detect a flood

Schools didn't get them for free though, the Year 7 2016-2017 Cohort got them for free. The current Year 12.
