Tried to join laptops to Intune using gpo method, however it fails and diagnostic output says:

Registration Type : fallback_syncError Phase : joinClient ErrorCode : 0x801c03f3Server ErrorCode : invalid_requestServer ErrorSubCode : error_missing_deviceServer Operation : DeviceRenewServer Message : The device object by the given id (3a4efe1exxxxxxxxxxxx) is not found.Https Status : 400Request Id : cbd84a7c-c9af-43bxxxxxxx

Apparently I need to make sure the on-premises computer object is synchronized to Azure AD. Run the Delta Azure AD Connect sync - tried that already, did not help.

laptops are Azure AD joined but that seems not to be relevant - same error happens even after they are removed from Azure AD.

In the meantime trying the Auto pilot method, imported couple laptops using csv generated by power shell script, created profile but not really sure what to next to have them intune joined properly so they can be managed.

Manual enrollment sometimes works, but not consistently. Logged ticket with Microsoft hoping for quick fix but it seems a long way off...

No clear answer from MS support, however ADFS/WAP now decommissioned in favour of AD connect for seamless sign on, these errors have gone, only to be replaced with others. RSOP results screen shows certain section where MDM application ID needs to go but this is not explained at all in relevant gpo section of admx template (latest).
