rjf2019 Posted November 9, 2020 Posted November 9, 2020 Looking to replace a network switch that has recently died - we are muddling through in the meantime. Which would you opt for, and why? Option One​ This requires the replacement of the network cabinet as it is particuarly shallow. It's an added cost, but one that can be afforded. It is my preferred option as keeping a simple network as simple as possible and means that data travelling from one downstairs location to another (e.g. a PC to a photocopier) can do so across the same switch. ​Option Two​ I would welcome any feedback because, as well as coming to a decision, I'd like this to be a useful learning experience for me also. FN-GM Posted November 9, 2020 Posted November 9, 2020 This is quite a simple network. from a technical point of view wouldn't really matter what design you choose. Personally though I would pick option 1. It's a more simple design and traffic between the 2 24 port switches wouldn't need to go via the core as it will be on the same switch.

mavhc Posted November 10, 2020 Posted November 10, 2020 Ah, PoE versions, annoying. Long term a larger cabinet is better, but I wouldn't worry about the longer path for the packets unless you have data showing the trunk ports will be near maximum capacity. SNMP log the current traffic flows
