Checkpoint VM using VHD Set

Good Afternoon,

 

I'm hoping someone will have run into the same issue and be able to help.

 

I have just built a new Server 2019 cluster and rebuilt all of our servers on 2019. This includes a new SQL cluster. Each SQL VM sits on separate hosts and have a VHD Set assigned to each VM for storing the databases.

 

The issue now comes when trying to backup the 2 SQL servers. Hyper V does not allow the creation on checkpoints with this error,

 

"Cannot take checkpoint for SQLSERVER because one of more shareable VHDX are attached and this is not part of a checkpoint collection"

 

From what I can see and understand, host level backup is doable with VHD Sets so I'm a bit confused as to why this is not working.

 

Any ideas and suggestions would be handy!

Are they both part of the same VM group (Within HyperV)? Think most backup software only supports it if so using shared VHDs.

 

Out of curiosity, what's the purpose of a SQL cluster on a cluster? Seems to be kind of counter productive, unless it's just for maintenance on said SQL server?

Yeah so I created a VM Group and that still didn't work.

 

To be honest not sure why I really done it. Just how it has always been I suppose and is quite handy for maintenance. Although the new severs are pretty quick and reliable it wouldn't really be too much of an issue and maintenance is generally done out of hours anyway. I will probably just remove the cluster and have 1 SQL Server. Just really annoying that Microsoft do not have much solid documentation on this. All I can find is articles that say it should work.
