Hi all - I’m wondering if there are any companies out there that have deployed 1:1 Intune for Windows devices in the edu sector - that won’t need to charge me a day rate to discuss the setup/scope of works.

Simply put I’ve done iPad 1:1 roll outs via tender before and it’s a great success with GBM who did a lot of the work for me.

It seems when it comes to windows devices there is an unknown number of days to talk about it and then deliver IT... surely there must be a few out there that can go - here is our turn key solution for schools - basic locked down setup and we won’t charge you to set it up if you buy laptops from us etc etc

I don’t want to do anyone out of fair pricing and work done either, but if I can get Apple iPads delivered through JamfSchool without major costs, maybe the same could be done with Intune for schools wishing to have laptops 1:1.

I’m upgrading our SCCM over coming week(s) to ensure it’s co managed before we make the move to tendering for this solution.

Any ideas on how your sites have successfully rolled out windows and Intune management would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

John

As you say, you don't want to do anyone out of fair pricing. That's good to see.

However, many businesses including ones I've worked for, have been burnt by schools who bring in companies to consult on the setup and scope of works required for a project, they do it for free on the provisio that there will be a deal at the end of it all, and then are told "we've decided to do it in-house." or "our incumbent have quoted us less for the work".

There comes a point where businesses decide they'll charge for these services, because if they're being used for free consultation by schools, they're not losing out if they're charging for it instead.

So you're being honest. Fair play to you. Unfortunately there are a lot of schools out there who aren't, so you're now missing out.

Also, the margins on iPads are WAY bigger than the margins on laptops for resellers and businesses. You're lucky if you make £1 for every laptop sold.

Hi Paul - I agree - it’s just a shame Microsoft edu Intune can’t have standard ready to go profiles which just need some WiFi and a certificate or two adding. I notice they have express configuration which is easy to use, and I also found a shared kiosk/labs template. It does seem some of it is ready done, but I really need a firm which is 100% Intune and laptop delivery for 1:1 (staff firstly) and it’s difficult to find any firm which can 100% say they have it already written down. This makes me feel like it’s a swim through Mud experience to get the detail done rather than a joyful experience I had with iPads.

With the advent of autopilot and CSP partner integration, maybe vendors could charge for on boarding the hardwareHash as a way to make markup?

Thanks

Hi I own such a company and do work in edu - but am not touting for work here so no iron in the fire..

PCs are such a more complex beast over laptops, and full-on tune on PCs is fairly new, to have a simplified productised offering at a price you want is challenging. With iPads etc, setup a few profiles, and pretty much forget about them.

ontop of all that you will no doubt have a pile of software you expect that’ll work with intune, but all will require perhaps quite meaty effort to make deployable via intune

I would certainly be quoting time and materials or fixed cost with very tight deliverables and a healthy risk budget attached.

that said, I Love the idea of intune edu in a box, I may publish some stuff like that once I finish my current intune edu rollout.

The margins on iPads are less than 2% and in bigger deals less than 1% I doubt that’s the case for laptops...

Yep, no margin in iPads. Not much in laptops / computers but close to zero in iPads.

Much simpler to configure though.

I went to a conference run by DM systems recently, they seem to know about how to do it and are on the pulse with the latest moves by Microsoft.

https://www.dmsystem.co.uk/technical-seminars

Their seminars are free and a good introduction to going cloud based 1:1 device.

But just to echo what others have said, this is all very new and windows is a massive beast to lock down on 1:1 devices.

What are you looking for?

A similar experience to Chromebooks and or iPads?

(Installations through App stores etc?)

It is achievable (I have done the configuration at scale for 30 schools, scripting the majority of the work). We have rolled it out to 10 primaries, with it taking on average 3-4 days on site.

To do this at this speed there are some compromises.

The majority of software isn't deployed for a few weeks after the migration if it hasn't been seen before (although most primaries have very little they actually need!)

You need a solution such as Papercut for printing to MDM devices.

All data is moved to SharePoint/OneDrive.

Staff have no administrative access to devices (much like iPads) installations are through the 'Company portal', essentially a private app store.

Hi I would be interested in what it is you have automated via a script etc

We have moved everything to OneDrive and Teams SDS for all our sites and already have Intune edu store setup along with sccm.

We have papercut too on 18.2 but have some works to upgrade to 19.2 in next few weeks.

We plan on upgrading sccm to support co-management but beyond that this is where I will struggle.

I’d like to keep it simple, locked down is fine, I can always look at opening up things down the line when we know where the land lies etc

Thanks
