Office 365 setup (DNS option)

Hello everyone, Hope everyone is safe & well in this difficult time.

 

We are in the process of completing office 365 setup. We have verified our domain and stuck on the next step for DNS setup. We are currently using on premises exchange server 2013. I would like to know which option do i need to chose on the DNS setup page without affecting our current email system.

 

The options are as follows

 

1. Setup my online services for me (Recommended)

2. I will manage my own DNS records

 

We don't want to make any change to our email system and just register for office 365 and then later create a hybrid environment before moving to office 365.

Who hosts your dns currently?

Basically the 1st option gets you to move your nameservers setting on your domain to one MS give you so you would want the second option as long as you have an external nameserver host that handles your dns entries right now. If you dont then maybe consider using something like Cloudflare as your dns host (you dont need to use the whole CDN/ddos protection thing, just dont make the *cloud* orange basically) for free.

Can we send emails without setting up DNS at this point? I know receiving emails require MX record change. Thank you

Yeah basically you want option 2. When you do that o365 will let you know the dns changes you need to make with your provider. You can create all the rest besides the MX record and mail will flow to your existing system.

This all depends on who hosts your DNS/nameserver (these are different from internal DNS) as you will either have an admin login to change this or request changes with your LEA/provider.

Thank you @ZeroHour for your help. Our emails are being sent and received through Microsoft which is fine for us at this moment. Great help here..

I was wondering if someone can guide us as how to move forward with setting up share drives for department for office 365. We have one shared drive which is shared by the whole school with each department's folder and each department has read and write access to their department's folder but have read access to all other folders.

 

Microsoft Teams is the way forward?

Use Teams.

 

also ensure you have MFA turned on (text to your phone and similar) so people get used to it from day one
